Vice President JD Vance departed Budapest on Wednesday after a two-day visit that saw him openly campaign for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's re-election — then pivoted to what may be the most consequential diplomatic assignment of his career. [1]

Bloomberg confirmed Wednesday that Vance will lead the US delegation to Islamabad on Saturday for in-person negotiations with Iran aimed at converting the fragile two-week ceasefire into a lasting agreement. [2] The whiplash is remarkable: from stumping for an authoritarian-friendly ally to brokering the end of a war, in under 72 hours.

In Budapest, Vance accused the European Union of "the worst examples of foreign and election interference" in Hungary, a charge that drew immediate mockery given that he had traveled to Budapest specifically to endorse a candidate. [3] Orban faces the toughest electoral challenge of his career on April 12, with opposition candidate Peter Magyar polling within striking distance.

Speaking to reporters before leaving Hungary, Vance called the US-Iran ceasefire a "fragile truce" and said the two sides are "in a good spot" ahead of the Islamabad talks. [4] He offered no comment on whether his Hungary visit complicated the diplomatic picture.

The Islamabad trip will be brokered by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who mediated the ceasefire announcement. Whether Vance can negotiate as effectively as he campaigns remains the open question.
