The Bishops Have Not Answered the Firing-Squad Order on Day Nine and Pope Leo Did the Talking

Nine days after the executive order restoring firing squad, electrocution, and lethal gas as federal execution methods, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has not issued a statement specifically responding to it. Archbishop Paul Coakley's last public comment about the administration's relationship with Pope Leo, posted to the conference's X account two weeks earlier, addressed a different fight. [1] The Coakley line on capital punishment in the existing magisterium has not been refreshed.

What has filled the space is the Pope. Pope Leo XIV recorded a video appearance for the DePaul University event marking the fifteenth anniversary of Illinois abolition, telling participants he offered his support "to those who advocate for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States of America and around the world." [2] OSV ran the line under a headline pairing the encouragement with the firing-squad restoration. Vatican News carried the Pope's words in full. Neither outlet quoted a USCCB officer.

The conference's standing position is intact — the catechism's 2018 revision and the encyclical Fratelli Tutti remain on the books — and at one level, the bishops' silence is doctrinally redundant. But silence is also a posture. The Coakley statement on Coakley's own beat, the firing squad inside US Catholic territory, has not arrived. On Day Nine, the institutional voice on this question is the Pope's, not the conference's, and the absence is the artifact. [3]
