Meta has told staff that the next round of layoffs will land on May 20, with roughly 8,000 employees affected — about 10 percent of the company's workforce — and 6,000 open roles cancelled in the same wave [1]. The cut is the largest since the 2023 "year of efficiency" round and arrives the same quarter the company guided full-year capex to roughly $135 billion against an AI infrastructure buildout that will outrun the rest of the Mag Seven [2].
The paper tracked Meta's bond pricing last week, where the $25 billion debt issue was four times oversubscribed even as the equity dropped 9.5 percent on the capex print. The May 20 layoff window is the cost-side complement to that financing event — credit pays for the data centers, payroll pays for everything else, and the everything-else line is being cut 10 percent.
Susan Li told the Q1 call that the company is "committed to operating efficiently" while infrastructure spending climbs, and that staffing will be reduced in May [3]. The areas named in internal memos run through Reality Labs, the Facebook social division, recruiting, sales, and global operations [4]. The teams sitting closest to the AI infrastructure orchestra — the GenAI org, Llama, the data-center operations group — are not on the cut list.
