Hurricanes Sweep Flyers in Overtime as the NHL Second Round Narrows

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime on Saturday to sweep their Eastern Conference second-round series 4-0 and advance to the Conference Final. [1] Game 4 in Philadelphia ended on a Jackson Blake overtime goal. The Hurricanes are now the first Eastern team into the third round in either the 2025 or 2026 playoffs; their opponent will be decided by the Buffalo-Montreal series, which sits 1-1 going into Tuesday's Game 3.

The Western second round is being decided in a register Carolina is not playing in. The Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 9-6 in Game 3 on Sunday to take a 2-1 series lead, an aggregate score line that has now seen 27 goals across three games. [2] The Vegas Golden Knights, leading the Anaheim Ducks 2-1, faced Game 4 in Anaheim Sunday evening Pacific time. The Western bracket is producing the higher-scoring hockey; the Eastern bracket is producing the cleaner outcomes.

The structural divergence between the two conferences is now visible in the bracket. Eastern series have been decided in fewer games. Western series have been decided in louder ones. Carolina is rested through to the Conference Final. Their opponent will play at least two more games and possibly three before meeting them. The schedule advantage in the Eastern bracket is now Carolina's to lose. [3]

The NHL's Sunday playback closed the night by pointing at Tuesday: Avalanche-Wild Game 4 in Saint Paul, and the Buffalo-Montreal Game 3 that decides which side of Game 4 the Hurricanes ride.
