Netflix Is Putting Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano on Live MMA

Netflix is staging a live MMA event featuring Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. [1] The booking combines the streaming service's live sports expansion strategy with a casting choice that carries its own political subtext.

Rousey was the most recognizable fighter women's MMA produced — dominant in the UFC through the mid-2010s, then defeated twice and absent from competition since 2016. Carano was fired by Lucasfilm in February 2021 after a social media post comparing the treatment of conservatives to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany; she was removed from The Mandalorian and her representation dropped her within hours. Netflix's decision to book her is not a neutral talent choice. The streaming service is hiring someone the entertainment industry collectively removed four years ago. X will read it that way, and it is correct to do so.

What Netflix is actually doing is following the same logic it applied to the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight and the NFL Christmas games: acquire live events that generate appointment viewing and cultural friction in equal measure. Rousey and Carano produce both. The fight will be live, which is the product differentiator. Whether either fighter is still competitive is almost beside the point. The event is designed to be watched and argued about, and Netflix has become very good at engineering that outcome. The Carano booking is the argument.
