Almodóvar's Press Screening Evacuated And Cannes Logistics Held

Cannes paused the Tuesday-evening press screening of Pedro Almodóvar's Bitter Christmas in the Bazin theater of the Palais after an elderly attendee suffered a medical emergency about fifteen minutes into the film, evacuated the room so emergency services could work, and then restarted the screening from the beginning once the person was transported to hospital. [1]

The festival's statement put the chronology in one paragraph: a person suffered a medical emergency during the press screening, the screening was interrupted, the theater was evacuated to allow emergency services to assist them, the person was conscious and responsive before transport, and the screening resumed from the beginning of the film once the intervention was complete. [1] Deadline's account adds that the attendee collapsed about fifteen minutes in. [2]

Almodóvar himself was elsewhere in the Palais, attending the simultaneous premiere of the same film in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Bitter Christmas is in the official competition, plays as a tragic comedy with Barbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, and has already been picked up for U.S. distribution by Sony Pictures Classics after its March opening in Spain. [1] None of that schedule shifted on Tuesday.

That is the small story buried inside the dramatic one. A press evacuation in the Bazin tested the festival's operations mid-week without producing a fatality, a security pivot, a schedule cascade, or a programming change. The Marché continued its slow adjournment, Hamaguchi remained the betting Palme favorite, and Cannes filed Tuesday under logistics rather than crisis.

Festivals are partly the films and partly the room. On Tuesday the room held.
