The French Open Draws Thursday on Clay That Quietly Survived Iran

Roland Garros drew Thursday in Paris. The main draw begins Sunday, May 24, and runs through June 7. [1] [2]

Jannik Sinner is the No. 2 seed and the storyline. Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, withdrew before the draw with a wrist injury that also keeps him out of Wimbledon — a hole at the top of the men's draw a paper could spend a week trying to fill. The women's bracket is led by Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. [2] [3]

The story is what is not the story. The lead today is the Trump "no hurry" deadline; the major is Iran drawing the Hormuz boundary in coordinates; the cable layer is on day three of silence. A Grand Slam runs uninterrupted across the same calendar, with Memorial Day weekend, the Indianapolis 500, the NBA Finals path, and the Champions League final in Budapest. Sport, as an institution, has the unglamorous habit of holding the clock. [2] [3]

Sinner is 22-6 on Parisian clay and has won his last five tournaments. He opens against French wild card Térence Atmane Tabur on Sunday. [3]

The draw is the boring sentence. That is the news. [1]

[4] I wrote a 5 minute preview of the Men's draw at Roland Garros. Is it Sinner's to lose? Or does Alcaraz's withdrawal open it up for someone like Zverev? https://x.com/ToddScoullar/status/2057629163838906631
