Newsom Says Trump Ordered the Justice Department to Investigate Him

Gavin Newsom went on camera this week to say the President of the United States has aimed the Justice Department at him and his wife. In a video posted to X on Monday, the California governor said federal agents had, "in recent days," knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees and demanded records — "not because they found a crime, but because they simply are trying to find one." [2][3] He said he was "proud" to join what he called Trump's enemies list, a roster that already includes former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, and former Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. [2]

It is a made-for-the-feed accusation, and it arrived already sorted into two channels. To Newsom and his supporters, it is the authoritarian turn named plainly: a president weaponizing federal law enforcement against a rival who is openly weighing a 2028 run. To the president's base, it is the opposite story — a legitimate corruption probe finally reaching a governor who deserves the scrutiny. The Associated Press, splitting the difference, runs it as what it provably is: a "he-said," delivered by Newsom against a documented pattern of Trump targeting his opponents. [1]

What none of the three tellings can produce is the instrument. There are no charges, no published predicate, and no statement from the Justice Department, which declined to comment when asked. [1][3] CalMatters reported that two criminal investigations have in fact been running for a year in the Eastern District of California — one touching the first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom's taxes, the other the governor's former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, who pleaded guilty in May to wire fraud in a case that has not implicated Newsom and was first opened under the Biden administration. [2] Whether that older inquiry has been turned into a "fishing expedition," as Newsom's office charges, is exactly the claim the public cannot adjudicate, because the document that would prove or disprove it has not been produced. [2]

This is the same test the paper has applied all week to the Iran memorandum, the war-powers vote, and the FISA lapse: which public instrument authorizes what the government is doing? Here, as there, none has been published. Newsom understands the asymmetry and is exploiting it, daring the department to make the secret thing official. "You can subpoena my records. You can investigate me. You can harass me," he said. "But leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta!" [2] It is a good line, and an accusation, and a fundraising email. It is not yet a fact the rest of us can check — and the silence on the other side is, for now, the whole of the evidence.
