Friday's edition argued that the interesting collision is not heat versus air conditioning but heat versus the queue of new large loads waiting behind it. Nothing this weekend contradicts that. What the weekend adds is the first hard look at how the collision is being priced while the record stands unbroken.
Start with the operators' own arithmetic, because X rarely quotes it. ERCOT's June outlook attributed the record forecast to two drivers of similar size, hotter weather and nearly two gigawatts of new large loads connecting between May and September, and still projected emergency probability under one percent for both June and July because solar and battery capacity have grown faster than demand. Now the divergence. On Friday, Al Jazeera published the frame now circulating widely on X: the heat wave exposes critical strain from the growing energy demands of AI data centers, with the implication that household reliability is being quietly subordinated to model training. [2] The strain is real; the subordination is not documented anywhere in the filings. What actually happens under Texas rules is blunter. Large loads bid into the same market, post collateral for their interconnection studies, and take curtailment obligations that residential customers never sign. When reserves tighten, the order of exposure runs the other way from the viral thread: miners interrupt first, data centers with flexibility clauses next, and conservation appeals ask everyone to raise a thermostat two degrees.
The consumer receipt worth watching is not the peak number itself. It is the ancillary services bill embedded in August rate filings, because keeping a reserve margin above an unpredictable queue is paid for by someone, and in Texas the someone is usually the retail customer through a four-figure line item nobody reads. The paper's position since the FERC large-load docket opened last month has been simple: interconnection reform decides whether AI's power bill lands on its own invoices or gets socialized through yours. Three records will settle the weekend cleanly. The settled peak, which ERCOT certifies within days and publishes without commentary. The evening net-load ramp, which shows whether batteries performed as advertised past sunset. And the count of conservation appeals issued, which is the market confessing that its probability estimate was optimistic. Any of the three can embarrass either side of the argument.
