President Trump told reporters that "the denuclearization of Iran is moving along well," citing "very good meetings" in Doha and pairing the claim with a fall in oil prices he attributed to the war he ordered. His aides, according to the same reporting, did not sit down with Iranian counterparts in Doha at all; they met mediators, amid open Iranian frustration over the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon. [1] A meeting with the go-between is not a negotiation with the party.

Analysts cited in CBS's live coverage went further, disputing whether substantive nuclear discussions have taken place in any form. [2] The president describes progress on a file that, by the account of people watching the talks, has not meaningfully opened. That is not a small gap. The nuclear program was the war's stated reason for being, and it was the one thing the June memorandum specifically did not resolve.

The paper made that point when the deal was signed. Its June 16 account found that the memorandum deferred rather than ended the program Trump had bombed: the war's aim became a 60-day agenda item, with low-level enrichment tolerated and no written cap. Deferral is not resolution. It is a promise to argue later, and "later" is now, and the clock on "later" is being eaten.

That is the part the presidential optimism omits. The 60-day implementation window is running against Iran's multiday state funeral, which has produced a negotiating pause of at least a week. The hard conversations — enrichment ceilings, stockpile limits — were always scheduled for this window, and they have not started. Every day of mourning is a day subtracted from the time available to have them. The president says the process is moving. The calendar says the process is waiting, and the window is shorter than it was.

The divergence is instructive. On X, Trump allies amplify the "moving along well" line and bolt it to the oil price — one account quoted him saying denuclearization "is moving along well" while "the oil price is way down... lower than when I started the attack on Iran." The mainstream frame, CBS's, puts the analysts' skepticism up front: the talks may not have substantively occurred. Both are reporting the same event. Only one is reporting the timeline.

There is a harder edge to the ambiguity. Trump has also said the United States will win the Iran war "one way or the other," and officials have told the Washington Post he is weighing whether to "finish the job" with renewed strikes even as the memorandum nominally holds. [2] "Moving along well" and "finish the job" are not obviously compatible descriptions of the same policy, and the president has offered both. The paper does not need to resolve which he means. It needs only to hold the clock, and to note that a nuclear file described as progressing has not, by the available accounts, opened — while the days in which it might open are being spent on a funeral.
