EA Ends Madden NFL 23 Online Play on July 13

Electronic Arts permanently retires Madden NFL 23's online services on July 13 — online multiplayer, Ultimate Team, and in-game purchases all go dark [1]. This is EA's shutoff, not the platform holder's: EA published the game and operates the servers, and it is EA's calendar that ends them.

Offline modes survive on every platform, EA confirms, but the modern game is built around the online features [1]. For most players, Ultimate Team and competitive multiplayer are Madden; when they stop, a large part of a $70 purchase effectively stops with it. Any unspent Madden Points can be used until July 13 and not after [1].

The shutoff sits inside a broader EA wind-down wave. NHL 22 and NHL 23 lose their online services on August 31, New World: Aeternum ends in-game transactions on July 20, and Let It Die ends transactions July 30 ahead of a server close [2]. It is a separate matter from Sony's disc-era legacy-service wind-down running the same weeks — the platform holder retiring its own online features on its own schedule. Two calendars, two operators, one result for the owner.

That is the divergence. Game Rant and Push Square report a dated, routine sunset for an aging annual title [1][2]. On X it reads as the preservation crisis in a single line — you own nothing, and the proof is a date. The paper's receipt is the date and the retired-modes list, not the nostalgia: July 13, online play gone, offline the only thing an owner keeps.
