Fire broke out shortly before midnight Sunday at the Na Ladprao beer hall in northern Bangkok, and by Monday morning at least 27 people were dead and 63 in hospital, 22 of them critical, the city government said [1]. Firefighters needed about half an hour to bring the blaze under control. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking to reporters at the scene, confirmed the death toll and added a detail that points at where the fire may have trapped people: many of the dead were found in the restrooms at the back of the bar [1].

Anutin relayed one account of how it started. A musician performing at the venue told him he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage before the power cut out; then came an explosion, and thick smoke filled the room [1]. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said investigators would examine the ceiling materials and whether emergency exits had been obstructed, either of which could explain why so many could not get out [1]. Neither man declared a cause. The circuit-breaker story is a witness's memory, not a finding.

The footage circulating online, shared by first responders, shows flames pouring from the front door and people fleeing through black smoke. It is vivid and it is real, but it captures the catastrophe, not its cause. The unanswered questions are forensic: which material burned, whether a rear exit was blocked, why the toll concentrated at the back of a room where a working exit should have stood.

The scene on Monday held the physical evidence. Street-facing windows had been blown out, and debris littered the sidewalk, including charred television sets, speakers and an electric guitar. Through the shattered glass, burned-out tables still held empty beer bottles. Forensic officers combed the remains for clues while Buddhist monks prayed for the victims and nurses handed out face masks against the lingering fumes. Authorities set up a registration point for relatives, and said identification was slow because many of the dead carried no ID or were brought in unconscious.

The number that will matter next is not the death toll but the inspection finding. Until Chadchart's investigators report on the ceiling and the exits, Bangkok has a body count and a plausible ignition, not an account of why an evening at a beer hall killed 27 people.
