Google workers delivered a petition bearing 4,500 employee signatures on Thursday and rallied outside the company's Mountain View headquarters, asking for guaranteed severance, voluntary exit packages, extended paid leave and an end to the GRAD performance-review system. [1] [2]

The paper's July 15 account of Meta workers' lawsuit kept alleged automated layoff selection at the evidence stage pending the tool, inputs and manager records, while Google's petition makes no equivalent proof and instead converts anxiety around layoffs and AI spending into demands management can answer.

No verified X post proves AI chose Google's laid-off workers, and KQED reports that Alphabet Workers Union president and Google engineer Parul Koul traced the campaign to 12,000 layoffs announced in 2023, while organizers said repeated cuts cost some workers visa sponsorship and health coverage and Google offered no response by publication. ABC7 counted more than 100 people at the rally and reported that union leaders delivered the petition to chief executive Sundar Pichai and three other executives; a staff member met them but offered no concession or collective-bargaining agreement. [2]

The petition's value is specificity because severance can be guaranteed, paid leave can preserve insurance and immigration status, and GRAD can remain or end, meaning workers have replaced a general fear with terms that require a visible yes, no or negotiation.
