Ukrainian officials first said a strike on the cargo ship Golden Leo near Odesa killed six sailors, left four missing and led to eight rescues. Two of the rescued people were injured, according to the Guardian's early cutoff-safe account. The incident follows Sunday's record of eight deaths across four Ukrainian cities, which kept each target, weapon, interception and casualty claim attributed. A ship requires the same discipline, not a maritime exception to it.
Ukraine's navy said Russia launched three cruise missiles at the vessel. Officials described the Golden Leo as flying the Guinea-Bissau flag and leaving Odesa with grain. The two official snapshots must retain their dates and categories. The Guardian's six dead and four missing did not, by arithmetic alone, make ten dead. They also determine who must notify families, preserve evidence, repair loss and answer a claim. A ship can cross several legal systems before its crew reaches shore.
Warning and location will shape any finding about intent. Investigators need coordinates, timing, notices to mariners, port records, automatic-identification data where reliable, missile or debris evidence and imagery. A ship leaving a combat zone can be a civilian commercial vessel without the current source proving why it was hit.
The casualty account likewise cannot establish the weapon path. Officials may identify damage consistent with missiles; an independent inquiry must connect fragments, impact points and sensor data to the claimed launch. Attribution by a government at war is evidence of its position, not a final legal finding.
