Bertha Makes Louisiana Landfall With 45 MPH Winds

At 2100 UTC, advisory 14 placed the center over southeastern Louisiana, about 25 miles southeast of New Orleans, still with estimated 45 mph winds. The weaker center does not erase hazards. Advisory 14 extended tropical-storm warnings and forecast surge, rainfall, flash flooding, surf and rip currents. That tense boundary matters especially because national coverage grouped Bertha with separate tornado and flood disasters in Kentucky and West Virginia. The assigned NHC records do not connect those inland events to this cyclone. Shared weather pages and dramatic images cannot establish meteorological causation.

The edition also excludes advisory 15. Although its local header falls late on July 22, its controlling summary time is 0300 UTC on July 23, after the immutable cutoff. The last admitted complete advisory is number 14 at 2100 UTC. [2] Operational archives make that boundary visible.

No verified X status was recovered after Bertha searches mostly timed out or returned no items. Platform clips and damage claims remain unobserved. The NHC records offer the stronger public service: exact landfall, center, intensity estimate, local observation and the continuing distinction between warning and impact.

A final consequence ledger must come from gauges, rain stations, utility records, roads, shelters, hospitals, emergency calls and loss assessments. It should identify timing and location so later Texas effects do not migrate backward into Louisiana's July 22 record. It should also distinguish Bertha from other storms.

Versioned storm reporting protects both urgency and accuracy. Residents need forecasts before effects occur, but later journalism should not rewrite those forecasts as observations. A simple table can retain advisory time, center, estimated intensity, warning area, station readings and local impacts as separate columns. That makes corrections possible and lets readers see when uncertainty narrowed, rather than presenting the final track as something forecasters and households always knew. The archive preserves that sequence.
