France Records 5,764 Excess Deaths During Heatwave Window

France's national health agency reported an estimated 5,764 excess deaths from all causes between June 17 and July 2, the Guardian reported on July 22. National excess may conceal local differences in nighttime temperature, housing, care facilities and access to cooling. A later study should preserve the national signal while testing regional and age patterns against comparable baselines. The goal is not to distribute blame across certificates; it is to identify preventable exposure without pretending the first estimate already did so.

The next record should show revisions as death registrations mature and should separate temporal excess from heat-attributable mortality. Until then, 5,764 is a large official estimate tied to a defined window. It is evidence of population-level harm during the heatwave, not a completed individual cause ledger.
