Coffee Intake Tracks Lower Liver Risk Across 354,957 Adults

An observational analysis followed 354,957 UK Biobank adults without cirrhosis or liver cancer for a median 13 years; compared with non-drinkers, people reporting at least five cups of coffee daily had 32% lower cirrhosis risk, 47% lower liver-cancer risk, and 42% lower liver-related mortality. Those are relative associations, not absolute benefits or proof that coffee caused the difference, and although the journal record identifies UK Biobank research combining clinical, imaging, and proteomic evidence, self-selected intake, health behavior, socioeconomic differences, and other residual confounding can remain after statistical adjustment. MRI and blood-protein subsets offered biological support because higher intake tracked less liver fat, iron, fibrosis, and inflammation while caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed similar patterns, but biomarkers can make an association more coherent without turning an observational cohort into a randomized trial. Searches found no authorized X status, leaving wellness and patient reaction unobserved, while ScienceDaily's protection frame is more confident than the design permits and Cedars-Sinai explicitly said researchers do not recommend beginning coffee solely for liver protection and noted that caffeine may be unsuitable for people with some heart, blood-pressure, anxiety, or sleep conditions. Preparation methods, changing intake, event counts, absolute risks, contraindications, and replication remain open; the study makes a large association worth testing but does not prescribe five cups or prove that coffee prevents liver disease.
