The ruling answers the narrow question left open by the July 24 account that kept disputed forensic evidence below a bind-over decision. AP reports that Olmedo found probable cause on charges of murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation. Those remain charges. A preliminary hearing asks whether enough evidence exists to continue a prosecution, not whether a jury should convict. The vocabulary sounds technical because the distinction is the protection.
That distinction also protects Celeste from the habits of celebrity coverage. Her death is not an interruption in a recording career, a fandom crisis, or a piece of reputation management. She is the person at the center of the case. Burke's stage name explains why the proceeding draws attention; it does not decide whose life gives the proceeding meaning.
The prior hearing account examined laboratory likelihood ratios, location data, and a recovered passport as different kinds of contested evidence. The judge has now found enough probable cause for the prosecution to continue. That decision does not resolve chain of custody, admissibility, alternative explanations, defense retesting, or how any item will withstand trial scrutiny.
The next hearing matters for the same reason. An August 31 arraignment can fix the operative charges, plea, custody, and schedule. It cannot be reported in advance as the beginning of testimony before a jury, much less as a verdict. Any later suppression motion or evidentiary ruling will occupy another rung in the process.
The three charges also require separate treatment. A ruling that each may proceed does not make them interchangeable, and evidence relevant to one allegation may not establish another.
