Governance and science remain separate
A second Reuters report added a congressional inquiry and further detail about Taylor Farms' contact with White House and FDA officials. Representative Robert Garcia said he was examining the company's role and whether it tried to influence FDA's response. An inquiry is not a finding, just as a requested meeting is not proof that an agency changed course. [2]
Taylor Farms has said it removed potentially affected products and suspended production at its central Mexico facility. FDA said the company agreed to remove affected produce after extensive discussions. Reuters also reported that a source said the company did not meet an established 24-hour period for deciding on voluntary action. The Guardian's earlier account documented an FDA false-positive correction while the recall remained active. [3] That correction withdrew one laboratory statement. It did not erase epidemiological evidence, traceback, or the recall. Conversely, an active recall does not prove that every illness, farm, herb, or package shares one source.
Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb raised hypotheses involving broader contamination and other produce from central Mexico, including parsley and cilantro. Reuters described those as possibilities while investigators had not identified an exact source. What the public needs next
The useful next release is not a larger merged number. Michigan and federal agencies should publish case definitions, covered dates, geography, confirmation status, and a person-level method for showing overlap without exposing patients. That would reveal whether the state is counting suspected reports that later appear in federal categories.
FDA should preserve a versioned chronology of the recall, laboratory statements, corrections, company meetings, and public notices. Inspection records, call logs, traceback, and product tests would show whether political contact changed a scientific or enforcement decision.
