Shared Claude Chats Surface in Google and Bing Results

Anthropic confirmed on Wednesday that publicly shared Claude conversation links had been indexed by Google and Bing because the share pages lacked noindex headers, exposing chats that included legal strategy, source code, credentials, and personal material to anyone who typed the right search query. Claude's share feature generates a public URL; the pages carried no instruction telling search engines to keep them out of their indexes; so Google and Bing crawled them, and the conversations became findable through searches of the claude.ai share path. It does not establish how many conversations were indexed, over what period, whether scraped copies persist, or that any already-saved link stopped working. Anthropic is the second major AI laboratory to repeat this exact failure. OpenAI's shared ChatGPT links surfaced in search results earlier through the same missing-noindex mechanism, and the fix was the same. The open questions are quantitative and technical. How many shared conversations entered the indexes, and in which engines' caches do copies still sit? And does the lineage run deeper than coincidence: do the labs' share features share not just a mechanism but an assumption that publicity is the user's problem after the click? [2][3]
