Astronomers have unmasked 44 Nysa — an asteroid discovered in 1857 — as a roughly 75-kilometer body made of three fused lobes, accompanied by a moon about one kilometer across. It would be the first three-lobed asteroid known in the solar system. [1]
A Lowell Observatory team resolved the shape using the SHARK-VIS imager on the Large Binocular Telescope, with the moon's motion tracked by SPHERE/ZIMPOL on the Very Large Telescope — two independent observing campaigns. The moon's orbit is the planned route to Nysa's mass, density, and ultimately its origin. [1][2]

And the formation question is explicitly unresolved: a contact trinary, three bodies gently fused, or tidal disruption with a missing family of fragments. [1]
