An armed Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed roughly 50 kilometers into Poland during Russia's July 29-30 mass strike on Ukraine and detonated near Tarnawa-Kolonia, outside Lublin, Poland confirmed Thursday. NATO jets scrambled in response. [1]

It is the first armed Russian missile recorded exploding on NATO soil in this war's ledger. No casualties were claimed, and no authority has established whether the incursion was a navigation failure or a deliberate probe. [1]

Poland's confirmation of the airspace violation was carried by DW, which recorded the crossing and the detonation site without assigning intent. [2] The wreckage is in Polish custody; the chain of evidence — and any response, from Article 4 consultations to air-policing changes — has not been recorded. The strike package it rode in on was aimed at Ukraine; where the weapon finished its flight is the fact that separates Thursday from every prior near-miss.

The frames have outrun the facts. "Deliberate provocation" and "contained violation" are both readings of a crater; the crater itself says only that an armed weapon crossed an alliance border and exploded. Intent is a finding, and no authority has made one. Contained or not, a detonation on alliance soil is a ledger first, and what NATO records next — consultations, a posture change, or nothing — is now the story.
