Hyundai Moves to Own Boston Dynamics Outright

Hyundai Motor Group disclosed on July 16 that it would make Boston Dynamics a wholly owned subsidiary by acquiring SoftBank's remaining stake of about 10 percent, exercising a put option written into the original 2021 sale. [1]

The price is a newspaper's number, not a filing's. Reuters first reported the plan on June 19 — $325 million for SoftBank's 9.65 percent, citing South Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper — and Bloomberg's July 16 record frames the buyout as full ownership secured at a steep discount as Hyundai prepares Atlas for factory floors. [2][3] Hyundai has confirmed the move; it has not confirmed the figure.

The consolidation lands the same week this paper tracked Generalist AI shopping a round at a $3 billion valuation — another price tag asserted without a deployment ledger behind it. The pattern holds: robotics valuations move faster than robotics production records, and the buyers keep paying for the difference.

What full ownership buys Hyundai is control of the Western flagship humanoid shop — Spot, Atlas, and the engineering culture SoftBank bankrolled for five years. What it does not yet publish is the economics — fleet size, per-unit cost, deployment schedule. The put is exercised. The proof remains on the factory floor.
