A Russian drone and ballistic missile attack killed nine people in Kyiv on Saturday. Another five Ukrainians were killed in Russian strikes on Tuesday. [1] Those numbers land after a week in which President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine had received only a third as many air-defense interceptors this year as in the same period of 2025, and that a Patriot shortage had changed the war's physics. [2]
Tuesday's physics file did not walk that sentence back. Wednesday does not either. Democracy Now tallies the dead. X reads the magazine. The physics has not changed overnight.
The United States stopped feeding Ukraine Patriots after the Iran war opened in February, keeping interceptors for its own batteries. [2] Partners have missiles, Zelenskiy said. What is missing are political decisions on deliveries and on production inside Ukraine. A beach strike on a Russian resort does not move that decision. Neither does a successful Ukrainian shot around Moscow.
MoD-style tallies still count intercepts when they happen. X counts the nights they do not. A reader who only watches official percentages will think the sky is still a contest. A reader who only watches casualty loops will think every death is a missing Patriot. Both miss that Russia still cannot turn Pokrovsk into a clean drive, and that Ukraine can still reach the Black Sea and the Moscow ring. [1][2]
Physics here is not a metaphor the paper invented. It is Zelenskiy's word for a magazine that cannot meet the shot. [2] When the tube is empty, a ballistic missile is a truck that does not have to dodge. When the tube is full, it is a gamble. Saturday's nine is what the gamble looks like after the United States kept the resupply for Iran. Tuesday's five is the same equation with a new date.
Deep Ukrainian drones do not refill those tubes. They change the political weather in which Western capitals decide whether to ship them. Beach dead in Russia will be used in Moscow as proof that Kyiv has capacity to spare. Stairwell dead in Kyiv will be used in Kyiv as proof that it does not. [1] Both uses can be sincere. Only one of them moves a Patriot.
A third as many interceptors is a ratio a child can do. If last year's flow was three, this year's is one. [2] The paper will not invent last year's raw count. It will keep the ratio Zelenskiy put on the record and the bodies Democracy Now put on the wire. [1]
The completed record is still nine, five, a third as many interceptors, and no public U.S. decision to reopen the magazine. [1][2] The next edition will owe the reader a delivery number. This one owes the reader the physics that Saturday already demonstrated.
A magazine is not a mood. It is a crate that either arrives or does not. Wednesday adds no crate. The paper will not invent one to make the sky look like a contest again.
