August Box Office Still Chases Tentpoles

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" took $360 million in the United States and Canada over the weekend, passing the unadjusted opening of "Avengers: Endgame." Sony said the global haul was $932 million. This paper's Wednesday filing logged the record. Thursday August still chases the same tentpoles. [1]

Adjust for prices and Endgame still sits first at an estimated $467 million in 2019 dollars. Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak said Spider-Man plus Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" produced the biggest domestic weekend theaters have ever posted. "Toy Story 5" is already past $1 billion worldwide. [1][2]

Year-to-date receipts are up 10 percent from 2025 and still 16 percent below 2019, Rentrak said. Warner's 2026 slate has yet to put a film past $250 million worldwide. [1][3] Christmas still has "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Dune: Messiah." Those films can print billions and still leave the mid-list cold. [4] Thursday is not a renaissance. Thursday is a very large spider and a very old hole.

Greg Durkin of Enact Insight said the Parker plot touched a friendship crisis that is acute for young men. Moods do not book October. Mid-budget titles still have to fill the weeks between tentpoles. Thursday is still a spider and a hole.
