The European Union has burned through 619,613 hectares this year as of Thursday's satellite count, from 1,768 fires large enough for satellites to map, already the third-worst season on record and nearly double the 20-year average for the date. Only the record 2025 season, at 968,167 hectares by August 20, sits above it. [1]

The geography is the headline inside the number. Belgium, France, and Slovakia have set records for this point in the year, and blazes are reaching northern Europe, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany. Fire risk, long a Mediterranean file, is now a continental one. [2]

A study published the same day explains what that means by century's end. Researchers found European burnt area rises 39 percent even under a 1.8-degree warming scenario, and approaches a near-tripling at 3.6 degrees. Yet the same paper holds an offramp: better fire management could offset more than 70 percent of the projected increase. Lead author Maik Billing's caveat deserves equal billing, that management cannot replace cutting emissions. [2]

Social media took the 39 percent and ran in both directions, doomists declaring Europe will burn regardless, skeptics attacking the model. Almost nobody shared the 70 percent. That omission matters, because the number argues against fatalism and for the boring work, fuel breaks, prescribed burns, faster response, that keeps villages standing.
