Mutiny Opens to 2.9 Million and a Distant Fourth

Mutiny opened fourth on Friday with $2.88 million from 2,703 theaters — a $1,064 per-theater average that ran less than half of Insidious' take. [1]

Jason Statham vehicles rarely need critics, and reviews landed Thursday regardless. [2] What the launch needed was timing, and Insidious took it. Horror owns late August, and the sixth chapter absorbed the genre audience a straight action opener would normally split.

Back-of-envelope arithmetic puts the weekend near $7 million — a standard 2.5x multiple applied to a $2.88 million Friday, the usual shape of front-loaded star action. [1] That is enough for a respectable studio press release and nowhere near a challenger.

Lionsgate dated this one all the way back in February 2025, another mid-budget bet in a market that has stopped rewarding them. [3] Statham remains a brand built for opening weekends rather than second weekends; his films live or die on the Friday crowd, and this Friday crowd went to a haunted house instead. [1]

Two weeks ago the pre-release tracking read upbeat enough that film X spent Friday quote-tweeting it as comedy. The gap between tracking and actuals is becoming its own late-summer genre.

Original mid-budget action keeps meeting the same wall: a superhero sitting on $825 million domestic and a horror brand with fifteen years of accumulated dread. Statham will open another movie next year and the wall will still be there.
