A glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border has killed at least 360 people and left more than 1,400 missing across Nepal and Tibet, Nepal's police reported this week, as flash floods tore through villages, roads, bridges and hydropower plants in the country's northern districts. [1] The U.S. Geological Survey initially logged a magnitude 4.4 earthquake near the epicenter, then revised its finding: additional analysis of seismic stations, long-period seismic waves and satellite imagery showed no earthquake had occurred at all. The event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow. [1]
The surge struck the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal's Rasuwa district and cascaded into the neighboring Nuwakot and Dhading districts with almost no warning. [1] Chinese state broadcaster CCTV separately reported 558 people missing on the Tibet side of the border, 260 of them foreigners, with three confirmed dead as of Thursday morning. [1] Nepal's Tourism Board said the missing foreign nationals included 33 Americans, 34 Australians, 24 Canadians, 4 Germans, 19 Malaysians and one Israeli — most of them on organized treks or pilgrimages through the mountainous border region. [1] Nepal's Electricity Authority confirmed six major hydropower and transmission facilities were damaged in the flooding, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington's embassy in Kathmandu stood ready to support Nepal with humanitarian assistance. The scale of the disaster produced two very different explanations. American networks covering the story leaned entirely on the glacier-collapse finding: CNN's own count, posted as rescue operations continued, put the toll at more than 160 confirmed dead and 1,300 missing, framed as deadly floodwaters on the Nepal-China border rather than as a story about upstream infrastructure. [2] On X, however, a competing theory spread quickly — that Chinese hydropower construction on the Tibetan side of the border had destabilized the slope that gave way, turning a natural disaster into a story about dam-building in a seismically fragile, high-altitude region.
Beijing did not let that theory sit. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters that Chinese and Nepalese experts had independently assessed the cause and traced it to a collapse of a high-altitude glacier inside Nepal — not to any Chinese project across the border — and dismissed the online criticism outright. "In the face of tragic disasters, we reject malicious speculation that has no factual basis," Guo said, adding that China had been "open, transparent and timely" in releasing information and that "smear and disinformation are most unwelcome at a time of disaster response." [3] He also pushed back on separate claims that Chinese authorities were understating casualties on their side of the border.
The dam-blame theory did not emerge from nowhere. China has faced years of scrutiny over its hydropower ambitions in Tibet, including a $167.8 billion dam under construction on the Brahmaputra River — described as the world's largest infrastructure project — built in a gorge where the river makes a sharp U-turn before flowing into India and Bangladesh. [3] Chinese geologists themselves have flagged that the project sits over an active fault line in one of the most seismically volatile regions on Earth, even as Beijing insists it is meeting the highest industrial standards. [3] That history is why, for many watching on X, a glacier collapse near a Chinese-controlled stretch of the Himalaya was never going to read as a purely natural event — and why Beijing moved so quickly, and so pointedly, to say otherwise.
For families still searching for missing relatives on both sides of the border, the argument over causation is secondary to the search itself. But the dispute over what destabilized the glacier — climate change alone, or climate change compounding decades of hydropower construction in one of the world's most fragile mountain systems — will likely outlast the rescue operations by months.
