Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition's prequel set during the original 2006 game's "Emergence Day," now has a release date: Oct. 6, exclusively on Xbox. Microsoft revealed the story trailer at Gamescom's Opening Night Live, showing the Locust Horde's first assault on humanity before the timeline of the original trilogy. [1]
The reveal was one of the night's marquee moments, and reaction on social media was immediate and enthusiastic -- studio hype accounts had been building toward the campaign-trailer premiere for days before the show. But the release date arrives inside a broader pattern at this year's Gamescom: much of the night's biggest news leaned on games that are already old. E-Day revisits a story from 2006. Final Fantasy VII Revelation closes out a remake trilogy of a 1997 game. CD Projekt's headline reveal was a remaster of 2015's The Witcher 3. [2]
None of that makes E-Day a bad bet on its own terms -- Gears remains one of Xbox's most bankable properties, and a prequel lets The Coalition tell a self-contained story without disturbing the existing trilogy's ending. But IGN's coverage of the reveal treats it purely as a release-date beat: trailer contents, launch window, platform exclusivity. It does not step back to note that Xbox's splashiest news of the night, like much of the rest of the show, came from a franchise nearly old enough to buy a beer, not a new one.
