Illinois Fossils Show Early Land Animals Skipped a Life Stage

For decades, paleontologists assumed the earliest four-limbed vertebrates developed the way modern amphibians do: hatching from eggs, passing through a larval tadpole stage, then undergoing metamorphosis into adults. A study built on rare juvenile fossils from Illinois, first published in Science in June and reaching a wider regional readership this week through Great Lakes Echo, concludes that assumption does not hold. Researchers Jason Pardo and Arjan Mann, co-lead authors at Chicago's Field Museum, studied fossilized juvenile embolomeres — crocodile-like early tetrapods that lived roughly 350 to 280 million years ago and grew to more than 10 feet as adults. The juveniles, recovered from the Mazon Creek fossil site southwest of Chicago, measured only a few centimeters yet already had limbs, teeth, and other adult-like features, with none of the external gills typical of an amphibian tadpole. The finding overturns an inference built almost entirely on analogy rather than direct fossil evidence, because soft-tissue developmental stages like a tadpole phase rarely fossilize at all. "The main takeaway from our study is that we can't look directly to modern amphibians to understand what the earliest tetrapods were like," Pardo said. "This discovery changes how scientists understand the transition of vertebrates from water to land." The research took nearly a decade. Mann first encountered an unidentified juvenile embolomere fossil in the museum's collection roughly ten years ago as a graduate student, and scanning electron microscopy at the Canadian Museum of Nature confirmed what it was. That single identification raised a broader question — whether the missing tadpole stage was unique to one fossil or characteristic of early tetrapods generally — which the team spent years answering by examining thousands of specimens across the fish-to-tetrapod transition. "This discovery is really a testament to the power of Mazon Creek... one of the best fossil localities in the world, especially for preserving soft tissues and delicate little fossils like these baby tetrapods," Mann said. None of it would have been possible without amateur fossil hunters. Every specimen came through a partnership between the Field Museum, the Lauer Foundation, and the Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois, with citizen scientists including Paul Demkovich, Ben Riegler, Rich Rock, and Tom Testa contributing finds. "This is a monumental discovery, and it would not have been possible without citizen science," Mann said. [1]
