Two people who visited UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville on August 26 have tested positive for measles, the Allegheny County Health Department said Wednesday. [1] They were not county residents. They left after the visits. The department, citing privacy, released no further identities. [1] UPMC is calling patients and staff identified as exposed that day. Potential windows include the Giraffe/Hippo waiting room on the third floor from 1 to 4 p.m., the Giraffe Clinic from 2 to 5 p.m., the third-floor cafeteria from 3 to 5 p.m., the main lobby from 1 to 5 p.m., and the Grape/Purple elevators from 1 to 5 p.m. [1]

Tuesday this paper reported that Paul Offit said he had lost trust in the CDC after the agency excluded two Pennsylvania measles-associated deaths from the national dashboard, while Kennedy's feed still called the reports fabricated. Monday it reported that the CDC dropped both deaths and that Lancaster's coroner had opened a second investigation without determining cause. Exclusion remains an action, not a finding that the deaths were invented. Those clinician quotes are not Wednesday's news. The waiting room is.

This is the third confirmed measles case tied to UPMC Children's. An unvaccinated Jefferson County resident was diagnosed last month while visiting the hospital. [1] Officials told anyone who may have been exposed not to walk into a clinic without calling ahead, and said people with only one MMR dose may still be susceptible. [1] Anyone unsure of their record was told to check vaccination status through the state release-of-records form. [1] Measles does not wait for a dashboard argument to finish. A children's hospital waiting room is a mixing chamber. Two visitors who do not live in the county can still leave the virus in the Giraffe room and the lobby elevators.

Pennsylvania's health department still lists two measles-associated deaths on its measles page. Patch, updating Wednesday morning, put the state's confirmed 2026 case count at 497. [2] The CDC's most recent national update, issued Sunday, still shows an asterisk rather than a number in the death box. "This week's measles outbreaks update will not include the two measles-associated deaths reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health on August 25 while CDC reviews additional information regarding the circumstances and causes of death," the agency wrote. [2] "At this time, available information does not establish whether measles caused or contributed to the deaths or whether the individuals died from other causes while infected with measles." [2] As of August 30, the same Patch copy cited 2,903 confirmed U.S. measles cases. [2] Do not fold 497 into last week's other ledgers. It is Wednesday's state figure.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had written that Governor Josh Shapiro's announcement "may even have been altogether fabricated." [2] Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni told NBC News the infant died from an internal hemorrhage and traumatic rupture of the spleen, and that he found measles virus in lung tissue. [2] State Health Secretary Debra Bogen said she had "thoroughly reviewed the case investigation information and sadly can confirm that there were two recent measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County." [2] The state's term, she has said, means laboratory or epidemiologic evidence of a measles infection. [2] PolitiFact, in a reprint updated Wednesday, noted that "measles-associated" in surveillance language is not the same field as the immediate cause on a death certificate, and that the second decedent remains unnamed. [3] An underlying infection can contribute to a death without being listed as the sole cause. Those are classification facts. They do not tell a reader whether measles killed either person, and they do not empty the Giraffe waiting room.

A reader of only the fabrication fight would miss the Giraffe waiting room. A reader of only the hospital alert would miss that the national death box is still an asterisk while Pennsylvania still prints two deaths and 497 cases. The virus was in a children's hospital on August 26. The argument about whether two people died of it has not moved the count on the federal chart. The county's job Wednesday was to name the hours and the floors.
