Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi said it will sue over Friday's U.S. sanctions, Al Jazeera reported Saturday. [1] U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack said it would be a mistake for Turkish officials "to read [the US's] narrow measure as a judgement upon Turkiye." [1] "The health of the Turkish financial system is not in question; the conduct of one institution was." [1] Saturday is the walk-back and the legal threat. Treasury did not move again today. Scale and China live in the economy companion. This file owns the diplomatic sentence.
The Treasury Department on Friday designated Golden Global and two subsidiaries under Executive Order 13902, accusing the bank of facilitating "tens of millions of dollars' worth of transactions for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force" and of giving the Iranian government correspondent access to move funds. [1][2] Washington alleged the bank "was established for the purpose of enabling Iran's rahbar network to transfer oil revenues from China to Turkey" using gold and cash. [1][2] OFAC said the bank knowingly offered correspondent services to Iranian institutions, including through accounts tied to Turkish businessman Sitki Ayan's network, sanctioned in 2022. [2] The subsidiaries are Istanbul-based Golden Global Varlik Kiralama and Golden Global Portfoy Yonetimi. [2] That is Friday's OFAC action. Do not invent extra designations. Do not convert a small-bank listing into a rupture with Ankara.
The bank said it met local and international compliance rules. [1] It said no transactions substantiate the U.S. claims. [1] Named individuals and entities "have never been and are not currently customers." [1] "We will exercise all our rights of objection and legal recourse in the most effective manner and will take the necessary actions at the earliest against these allegations and the decision." [1] A promised suit is not a filed complaint in this copy. Print the threat. Do not write a docket number that is not here.
Secretary Scott Bessent said financial institutions "continue to find out the hard way that we are serious about Operation Economic Outcast." [1][2] The listing puts the bank and the two subsidiaries on OFAC's Specially Designated Nationals list and cuts U.S. financial-system access. [1][2] The State Department called the action the latest step in that campaign and said facilitating Iran's illicit finance "carries serious consequences." [3] Spokesman Thomas Pigott said the United States remains committed to cutting the regime off from the international financial system. [3] Barrack's Saturday line is the Ankara read of the same Friday paper. Narrow measure. Not Türkiye. One institution.
Last week the United States moved on the UAE operations of Egypt's Banque Misr. [1] Bessent had said on Tuesday, at a G20, that Washington would likely announce a bank sanction this week and another next week. [1] Friday's designation is this week's. Saturday's news is the ambassador and the lawsuit line. Do not pretend OFAC opened a second Turkish file overnight. Do not write a Türkiye rupture. A promised suit is the bank's Saturday sentence. Barrack is the embassy's.
