In an interview this week, he told IGN he was "bummed out" that the season was written before the 2024 presidential election, meaning the show's parallels to current politics are coincidental rather than responsive. The trailer shows enough: a supe-controlled America, a resistance operating from underground, a virus that could eliminate every powered person on earth. [3]

The show's cultural position has shifted over its five-season run. When The Boys premiered in 2019, it was a dark comedy about corporate superhero culture -- a knowing wink at the Marvel machine. By Season 3, it was a political satire so pointed that right-wing commentators accused it of liberal bias while left-wing critics argued it didn't go far enough. By Season 4, the Homelander-in-the-White-House arc had crossed from metaphor into blueprint. Season 5 arrives during a real war, with a real president exercising war powers without congressional authorization, in a country where the distance between fiction and front pages keeps shrinking.

Amazon is betting the finale is an event. The marketing campaign -- "one last bloody candle" -- has leaned into finality.
