MEUs are specifically designed for the types of operations the conflict may soon demand: securing shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, seizing or blockading contested territory like Kharg Island, or conducting forced entry operations.

President Trump attempted to dampen ground war speculation earlier this week, saying "I'm not putting troops anywhere," before adding, "We will do whatever is necessary" [1]. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has projected no quick end to the campaign, with official Pentagon messaging describing the mission as "laser-focused" on destroying Iran's offensive missile capacity, navy, and security infrastructure.

But the deployment pattern tells a different story. Kharg Island, which handles roughly 90 percent of Iran's oil exports, has been reported by The Guardian as under consideration for occupation or blockade by U.S. officials [1]. Controlling Kharg would simultaneously cut off Tehran's primary revenue source and require the kind of amphibious ground-capable forces now converging on the Gulf.

The Stars and Stripes reported that the move adds at least three more ships to the region alongside the approximately 2,500 Marines [3]. Combined with the carrier strike groups, destroyer squadrons, and submarine presence already in theater, the naval buildup in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea now constitutes one of the largest American flotillas assembled since the opening of the Iraq war.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world's oil transits, remains effectively contested. Iran has used mines, drones, and attacks on commercial shipping to restrict passage, and reopening it is a stated U.S. objective as Trump's 48-hour ultimatum to Tehran expires today.
