TL;DR

Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio — a sub-10-person stealth startup founded 8 months ago — for $400M in stock to enter drug discovery.

MSM Perspective

Anthropic expands beyond AI into life sciences with acquisition of drug-discovery-focused startup Coefficient Bio.

X Perspective

9 people. 8 months old. $400 million. The AI acquisition math is becoming completely untethered from anything resembling reality.

Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio last week for approximately $400 million in stock — an all-stock deal for a company that had fewer than 10 employees and was founded eight months ago.

Coefficient Bio was built by Samuel Stanton and Nathan C. Frey, both of whom came from Prescient Design, Genentech's computational drug discovery unit. Their platform, which was operating in stealth mode, used AI to perform biotech research tasks: drafting drug R&D plans, analyzing biological data, and, according to reporting by The Information, enabling AI to carry out work that previously required teams of specialized scientists.

The Coefficient Bio team will join Anthropic's healthcare and life sciences group. The acquisition is the clearest signal yet that Anthropic is positioning Claude not just as a general-purpose reasoning model but as a tool for the specific, high-stakes domain of biological research — a domain where errors have consequences measurably different from getting a legal memo wrong.

For context: $400 million is roughly $44 million per employee, for a company that had not yet publicly launched a product.
