Trump Told AFP It Was 100 Percent Total Victory — Here Is What He Actually Got

TL;DR

Trump declared total victory in an AFP call, but the agreement gives him a 14-day pause, a negotiating table he doesn't control, and a Lebanon theater Israel kept running.

MSM Perspective

AFP published Trump's quote verbatim and led with it; the Wall Street Journal contextualized it against the terms of the agreement, which are considerably less than total.

X Perspective

X was unforgiving: accounts on both left and right called the 'total victory' framing premature, comparing it to the tariff pause of April 2025 dressed up as a win.

Donald Trump called AFP on Tuesday evening and said the United States had achieved "total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it." [1]

What the United States achieved was a 14-day ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, in which Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping and to send negotiators to Islamabad on Friday. The basis for those negotiations is Iran's own 10-point plan, which includes lifting all US sanctions and a formal US withdrawal from the region. Trump has not agreed to those terms — he has agreed to discuss them. [2]

The Kobeissi Letter, a financial analysis account with a large following, called the ceasefire "similar in nature to President Trump's April 2025 tariff pause" — a short-term de-escalation framed as a win, with the underlying conflict unresolved. [2]

The comparison is apt in structure. In April 2025, Trump suspended tariffs for 90 days, declared it a success, and used the breathing room to negotiate from a slightly stronger position. The Iran ceasefire follows the same logic: pause the bleeding, claim the pause as victory, use the two weeks to extract concessions. The difference is that tariff negotiations are symmetric. Nuclear negotiations with Iran are not.

Trump also told AFP he believed China had helped push Iran to the table. China has not confirmed this. Iran's SNSC statement made no mention of Chinese pressure. What Trump got for his 39 days of war is a negotiating table, not a treaty. Whether the table produces anything is the story of the next 14 days. [1]
