Anthropic Quietly Passed OpenAI in Revenue and Nobody Noticed

TL;DR

Anthropic hit a $30B run rate, surpassing OpenAI's $24-25B, and the revenue crossing went uncovered by mainstream outlets.

MSM Perspective

Bloomberg and The Information tracked revenue figures separately but neither flagged the moment Anthropic overtook OpenAI.

X Perspective

X spotted the crossing before any outlet — Claude Code alone at $2.5B ARR became the proof point for the shift.

Anthropic grew from $1 billion to $14 billion in annualized revenue in twelve months. Then it accelerated. The company now sits at roughly $30 billion in run rate, according to The Information, which puts it ahead of OpenAI's $24-25 billion. [1]

Nobody in mainstream media covered the crossing. No headline. No breaking-news chyron. The most significant shift in the AI revenue race happened in the gap between quarterly earnings calls, and the outlets that track both companies published the figures weeks apart without connecting them.

OpenAI still commands the larger valuation — $852 billion, with 900 million weekly users and projections of $62 billion by 2027. [2] But valuation and revenue are different conversations. Anthropic projects $55 billion next year, and Claude Code alone generates $2.5 billion in annualized recurring revenue. The developer tool that barely existed eighteen months ago now outearns most enterprise software companies.

The math that matters is simpler than the hype suggests. Anthropic at a $370 billion valuation with $30 billion in revenue feels, as one investor put it, "substantially more comfortable" than OpenAI at $820 billion with $25 billion. [1] One is priced for dominance it already demonstrates. The other is priced for dominance it must still prove.

OpenAI has the consumer brand, the installed base, and the partnership with Microsoft. [2] Anthropic has the revenue trajectory. Markets will eventually decide which advantage compounds faster. For now, the AI race has a new revenue leader, and the press release announcing it does not exist.
