Eddie Bauer Stores Dark on Day Ten With Eight Days Left on the Closeout Clock

Day 10 of Eddie Bauer's 174 stores dark. No qualified bid has emerged. The brand that Eddie Bauer founded in Seattle in 1920 — and that outfitted the 10th Mountain Division in World War II before becoming a mall-based casualty of pre-e-commerce real estate — will close every North American retail location by April 30 unless a buyer appears this week. [1] None has.

The paper's April 21 read on day nine described the pattern: Chapter 11 filed February 9, a restructuring support agreement with lenders to conduct liquidation while pursuing a going-concern sale, a March 6 auction cancelled after no qualified bids cleared the deadline. [2] A Colin Anten proposal filed last month was deemed by the debtors to lack "the financial wherewithal necessary to consummate the contemplated transaction." The order continued the store-closing sales at all brick-and-mortar locations unless a more value-maximizing transaction surfaced.

RCS Real Estate Advisors is marketing 174 leases across 40 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces, totaling more than 1.08 million square feet. Many of those leases sit in the same mall footprints that other specialty brands have exited in 2025 and 2026 — Francesca's liquidated roughly 400 locations earlier this year. [3] The leases have option value for landlords looking to redevelop anchor spaces. The Eddie Bauer name has option value for a strategic buyer willing to license it. Both conversations are happening. Neither has produced a closing offer.

Eddie Bauer has gone bankrupt three times — 2003, 2009, and now 2026. The retail entity this time is licensed from Catalyst Brands, the JCPenney-Sparc combination formed last year; e-commerce and wholesale run through a separate licensee, Outdoor 5, and are not affected by the store wind-down. [2] What closes on April 30 is the storefront footprint. What survives is the trademark and the website. What does not yet exist is a strategic buyer who would prefer to acquire both.
