The White House had Vice President JD Vance ready to travel for the Witkoff-Kushner Pakistan trip and then did not need him. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt named Vance as the standby option for any Iran channel; on Sunday, Trump cancelled the envoys' flight and recast talks as a phone line he controls. [1]

The paper previously noted Vance's narrowing public presence as the carrier stack converged. Sunday hardens that absence. Trump's Truth Social line — "Nobody knows who is in charge, including them" — and his "we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!" framing crowded the day's record. [1] AP carried the same dismissal of envoy travel: "we're not sending people to travel 18 hours to meet." [2]

Vance's account produced nothing. The administration's diplomacy went from a Vice President-led pre-strike trip in March to an emissary pair in April to one man with a phone in late April. Naming Vance as standby is not the same as putting him in front of a camera, and the omission is now the pattern. [3]
