April 28 was not a metaphor in Jacqueline Smith's firing notice. UPI reported that the Stars and Stripes ombudsman was told Tuesday would be her last day. [1] The paper's Monday brief said the National Press Club had moved the firing from personnel action into institutional response. Now the calendar has supplied the next artifact.

Smith's own column said the action was not grievable and came after she warned Congress about Pentagon pressure on the military newspaper. [2] Her earlier comics column made the daily-life stakes visible: wire copy, syndicated features and comic strips were not luxuries to readers who saw the paper as morale infrastructure. [3]

PEN America and the National Press Club both objected. [4][5] What did not arrive by the last day was the more important document: a Pentagon reversal, reinstatement, hearing notice or written guarantee preserving the ombudsman's independent route to Congress.

That is why this is still a press-freedom story with unusually concrete parts. A watchdog role created to protect independence reached its termination date while the institution under watch said no operative new thing.

The next serious response must be equally concrete: reinstatement, protection language, a hearing or a written independence guarantee.
