NASA's Artemis III Crew Will Rehearse Docking, Not Walk on the Moon

NASA named the Artemis III crew on June 9: commander Randy Bresnik, European Space Agency pilot Luca Parmitano, and mission specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio, with Robert Hines as backup. [1] The name evokes a Moon landing. The mission, as currently defined, does not deliver one.

Targeted for 2027, Artemis III will launch the four into low Earth orbit to test docking with one or both of the commercial lunar landers being built by SpaceX and Blue Origin — a roughly two-week flight, four days longer than Artemis II, designed to wring out life-support and in-flight docking systems. [1] It is the instrument stage, not the flag-planting. A crewed surface landing waits for Artemis IV in 2028, "assuming NASA sticks to its latest Artemis timetable." [1]

That gap between the name and the mission is exactly the boundary the paper drew June 15, when it argued that the X-59's milestone was mission setup, not a public standard. Here the stage is docking, and its readiness is hostage to hardware: both SpaceX and Blue Origin, each assigned a lander, have suffered notable recent setbacks. [1] On X, the same announcement reads as triumph to some and as a schedule that cannot hold to others. The accurate frame is narrower than either — a named crew for an orbital rehearsal of landers that are not yet ready to land.
