BD ChloraPrep Lots Send Hospitals To Shelf Checks

BD's ChloraPrep recall remains on FDA's recall alert list as a hospital shelf check, not a consumer scare, because the task is to find two lot numbers before use: lot 4032183 of ChloraPrep Clear 1 mL Single Sterile applicators and lot 4073005 of FREPP Clear 1.5 mL applicators with paper lidding, catalog numbers 930480 and 930299, expiring January 31 and March 31, 2027 [1][2].

FDA says the reason is potential fungal contamination that could allow growth of Aspergillus penicillioides, with skin-preparation products posing serious infection, sepsis, illness, death, or surgical-intervention risk if contamination reaches the bloodstream during catheter placement or a surgical site [1].

BD reported no adverse events, but the lots moved to distributors and hospitals between March 2024 and June 2024, and the company told customers and distributors to stop use immediately, destroy affected units under facility process, and seek replacement for directly purchased product through a response form [1].

This is the kind of recall X may miss and MSM may underplay because there is no consumer pantry image; the useful record is whether a hospital supply room can find lot 4032183 or 4073005 before an applicator is used on a patient.
