Six weeks have passed since Governor Gavin Newsom announced on June 15 that the Trump Justice Department had opened an investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. [1] There is still no charging document. No public predicate has been filed. No recusal or conflict disclosure has appeared in any court proceeding. The public record of this investigation consists entirely of Newsom's own statement and third-party accounts of federal agents knocking on the doors of family friends and former employees. [1]

This paper noted when the investigation was announced on June 16 that silence is the whole of the public evidence — not exoneration, and not proof of targeting. Six weeks of additional silence does not resolve that ambiguity. It extends it. There are two possible readings of the silence: DOJ has evidence it is building toward a charge, or DOJ has no predicate strong enough to charge. The public record cannot currently distinguish between them.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said Newsom's claims of political targeting are not "grounded in fact." Blanche did not confirm or deny that any investigation exists. [1] The Justice Department has not filed any public instrument that would let an outside observer evaluate the question either way. Newsom's office filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the investigation's records; no records have been produced. The paper's position: the abuse-or-corruption question is decided by published predicates and charging instruments, not by the loudest framing. None of those documents has appeared. That is the operating reality, and it remains unchanged.
