The federal count reached 431 on Wednesday, up 86 cases and five states in a single update. Fifty-seven people have been hospitalized, up from 36. No one has died. Illness onsets run from June 19 through August 2 across 32 states. [1] [2]

The restaurant exposure closed early. Investigators identified 28 illness clusters at Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA locations across eight states; of 224 people interviewed, 203 reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before falling ill. Both chains stopped serving the affected peppers after being notified, in July, and health agencies say neither poses an ongoing risk. [3] What kept expanding was everything downstream.

The traceback points to one common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, supplying Coast Citrus Distributors. The distributor agreed to recall implicated product and has stopped importing from the grower. The grower itself remains unnamed. [2] Meanwhile the recalls cascade through groceries: Taylor Fresh Foods pulled peppers and prepared foods sold under brands including Hannaford, Kroger, Target, Trader Joe's, and Walmart; Whole Foods recalled dips and salsas in twelve states; NatureBest recalled soup mix and pico de gallo. Best-by dates ran into mid-August, so check the fridge. [1]

The rising count mostly describes infections that happened before the pulls and finished the slow road through testing. The grower's name describes something else: accountability that has not arrived.
