US Cyclospora Cases Hit 17,180 for the Season, Far Above Last Year

What the fourteenfold jump actually demonstrates is not that Cyclospora exploded nationally this year in some diffuse, unexplained way. It demonstrates that one lettuce-linked outbreak, concentrated in one state, was large enough on its own to reshape the entire country's year-over-year comparison. The national number is real. So is the Michigan number underneath it. Readers who see only the multiplier without the denominator will believe they are looking at a nationwide emergency accelerating in real time, when they are mostly looking at one already-reported outbreak finishing its seasonal run.
