The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced 540 confirmed measles cases across 36 counties so far in 2026. [1] That is Thursday's state count. Do not fold it into Wednesday's 497, Tuesday's 460, or last week's other denominators. In a separate release on the same newsroom tree, the department said an individual from outside Pennsylvania tested positive and may have exposed others at the New Stanton Service Plaza on the westbound Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County on August 17. [2] Patch, at 7:46 a.m. Eastern Thursday, named the Burger King, Starbucks, Sunoco, 7-11, restrooms, and dining area. [3]

Wednesday this paper reported waiting-room exposures at UPMC Children's, 497 state cases, two deaths still on Pennsylvania's page, and a CDC asterisk. Those hospital windows are not today's news. Tuesday it reported that Paul Offit said he had lost trust in the CDC after the dashboard exclusion, while Kennedy's feed still called the reports fabricated. Monday it reported that the CDC dropped both Pennsylvania deaths and that Lancaster's coroner had opened a second investigation without determining cause. Exclusion remains an action, not a finding that the deaths were invented. Do not collapse those two facts. A coroner's spleen finding is not a CDC table. An asterisk is not a finding that the deaths were invented.

The dual ledgers have not merged. Patch's Wednesday recap still had the health department listing two measles-associated deaths on its measles dashboard, and still carried the CDC's language that "available information does not establish whether measles caused or contributed to the deaths or whether the individuals died from other causes while infected with measles." [4] The federal death box, on that last fetched copy, is an asterisk, not a number. A blocked fetch of the CDC page does not convert the asterisk into a cause-of-death finding, and it does not empty Pennsylvania's two. Health Secretary Debra Bogen has said she reviewed the case files and can confirm two recent measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County, using a surveillance term that means laboratory or epidemiologic evidence of infection. [4] Kennedy wrote that the announcement "may even have been altogether fabricated." [4] Those sentences still sit beside each other. They are not today's count.

The operating record is a highway plaza and a moved case total. The 540 release still points readers to a dashboard for cases, hospitalizations, deaths, community transmission, and vaccination efforts. [1] It does not say the CDC has accepted either death. Do not treat 540 as a verdict on cause of death. Patch's Wednesday recap, still live Thursday in the related rail, used 497. [4] That was Wednesday's state figure. Thursday's is 540. Keep them unmerged.

Since late April, state officials have administered more than 3,700 MMR doses at more than 100 pop-up clinics. State health-center staff have given more than 5,700 MMR doses in 2026. Providers usually administer about 25,000 MMR doses in a typical month; in August they administered more than 46,000. [1] Nearly 20 percent of people who contract measles are hospitalized. Death from measles, the state's general language says, occurs in one to three patients per 1,000 cases. [1] That is a textbook rate, not a finding on Lancaster. Two doses of MMR provide 97 percent protection. [1] [3] Anyone who stopped at New Stanton on August 17 was told to check vaccination status and watch for fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a rash that starts on the head and spreads down, beginning 7 to 21 days after exposure. The virus remains in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. People with symptoms were told to call a provider or the department's toll-free line, 877-PA-HEALTH, rather than walk into a clinic. [2] [3] Patch, citing the CDC, put the national 2026 case count at 2,903 as of August 30. [4] Do not fold Pennsylvania's 540 into that national table as if they were printed the same morning.

A reader of only the fabrication fight would miss the westbound rest stop. A reader of only the 540 headline would miss that the national death box is still an asterisk while Pennsylvania still prints two deaths. The virus was in a Turnpike plaza on August 17. The argument about whether two people died of it has not moved the federal chart. The state's job Thursday was to name the count and the plaza.
