TL;DR

George Russell won Australia, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli won China — Mercedes has dominated the first two races of F1's radical 2026 regulations era.

MSM Perspective

Sky Sports and Formula1.com report Mercedes' 1-2 finishes in both opening races as the Silver Arrows capitalise on F1's radical 2026 aerodynamic and powertrain regulations.

X Perspective

F1 Twitter is stunned by Mercedes' dominance and Antonelli becoming the youngest race winner in history, with many calling it the biggest regulation-change upset since Brawn GP in 2009.

Formula 1's radical 2026 regulations were supposed to reset the competitive order. They did — just not the way anyone predicted. Mercedes has won both opening races. George Russell took the Australian Grand Prix on March 8 from pole position. One week later, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli won the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, becoming the youngest race winner in Formula 1 history. [1] Both races ended with Mercedes 1-2 finishes.

The 2026 regulations are the most significant technical overhaul in a generation: new aerodynamic rules emphasizing ground effect, active aerodynamics for the first time, and a dramatically revised powertrain with greater electrical power. The intent was to end Red Bull's dominance. The result, so far, is that a different team has seized the advantage. Ferrari's strategy failures in Melbourne and struggles in Shanghai suggest the Italian team misread the new aerodynamic philosophy. [1]

Two other developments reshape the 2026 grid. Audi has entered as a constructor, taking over Sauber's entry, with significant Volkswagen Group resources. And General Motors' Cadillac will join as the 11th team — the first new entry on the grid since Haas in 2016. The war forced cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds, compressing the early calendar and giving Mercedes fewer races in which to build its points lead. [2]

Antonelli, who turned 19 in August, is being compared to Max Verstappen's debut season. The comparison may be premature. Two races is a data point, not a trend.
