What is new is process. Direct talks between Washington and Tehran opened in Islamabad, with 18 world leaders calling for the ceasefire to be extended to include Lebanon [2]. Israel-Lebanon contacts were reported. Hezbollah rockets resumed overnight — approximately 30 — underscoring the ceasefire's most critical limitation: it covers the US-Iran axis and nothing else. Not Lebanon. Not the Israel-Hezbollah front. Not Gaza.

The ceasefire's most important product is not peace. It is the existence of a diplomatic framework. Before this week, the US and Iran were exchanging strikes. Now they are exchanging delegations. The distance between those two conditions is enormous, even if the conditions on the ground in Lebanon have not changed.

Four days in, the pattern is legible. The ceasefire is real between its signatories and fictional for everyone caught in the adjacent conflicts. The Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the ceasefire expands. Lebanon will keep dying until it is included. The process exists. Whether it can grow fast enough to matter is the only question left.
