Madonna's Twenty-Year Line Gave Weekend Two Its Sentence and Weekend One a Loss

Weekend Two of Coachella ended Sunday night with Karol G closing the main stage at 10:10 p.m. Pacific as the festival's first Latina headliner in 27 years, bringing out J Balvin, Peso Pluma, Becky G and Ryan Castro across a set that also announced her Tropicoqueta tour. [1] The paper's position Monday was that the cameo economy had accelerated into the substitute product for the tour itself. Five days later, the convergence is blunter: Vice, USA Today and Okayplayer each filed versions of the same sentence — Weekend Two outperformed Weekend One — and the sentence held.

Friday's Sabrina Carpenter set is the artefact the festival will sell. Carpenter performed "Juno" to the line "Have you ever tried this one?" and the track cut to "Vogue." [2] Madonna rose through a stage lift in what she described as "the same boots, the same corset" as her 2006 Sahara Dance Tent debut. [3] They duetted "Vogue" and "Like a Prayer," then debuted two unreleased Confessions II tracks — "I Feel Free" and "Bring Your Love." The line Madonna delivered, the one Carpenter's team wanted: "Twenty years ago today, I performed at Coachella. I was in the dance tent, and it was the first time I performed Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part I in America." [3][4] Her manager Guy Oseary posted to Instagram that he had called Paul Tollett in 2006 with the Sahara Tent idea for Madonna's original debut; Madonna followed with her own "moment in history, I'll never forget" post. [5]

Saturday carried the other receipts. Justin Bieber returned with Billie Eilish, SZA, Big Sean, Sexyy Red and Dijon after Weekend One critics called his set "lazy." [6] Addison Rae brought Olivia Rodrigo to the Coachella Stage for the live debut of "drop dead" — a single released 24 hours earlier — after the pair first performed Rae's "Headphones On." [6][7] Rodrigo's last Coachella appearance had been a 2024 guest turn with No Doubt. Giveon brought Snoop Dogg. Sombr brought Billy Idol. Kacey Musgraves arrived on horseback for her first Coachella set since 2019. The paper's Weekend Two cameo-economy frame described the texture; Saturday provided the density.

Sunday belonged to Karol G. She reprised her Weekend One guest list — Wisin, Mariah Angeliq, Becky G, Cigarettes After Sex's Greg Gonzalez on the shoegaze-reggaeton hybrid "Después de Ti" — and added Balvin and Castro to honor Medellín, Peso Pluma for "Qlona," and a full tour announcement. [1] Her set leaned into the first-Latina-headliner frame; the speech, in English and Spanish, finished with "Forever wild — Latina forever." [8] FKA Twigs, BIGBANG's reunion, Clipse and Kaskade filled out the Sunday bill.

The twenty-year line ran through everything. Madonna announced Confessions II for July 3 via Warner and released "I Feel So Free" at 12:30 a.m. Pacific after Friday's set. [4] The festival's second weekend had the superior lineup, the superior guests, and — per Weekend One critics at Vice and USA Today — the superior version of every set that ran twice. Weekend One's Bieber set got a second-chance remake; Carpenter's got a Madonna anchor; Karol G's got four new guests. The competitive form of Coachella is now Weekend Two, and the festival has learned which weekend to sell first.
