CBS Radios Bari Weiss Sign Off Counts Down To T Seventeen

CBS News Radio counts down to T-17 from Tuesday: the Bari Weiss memo of March 20 set a May 22 sign-off date for the radio service founded in 1927 and reaching about 700 affiliated stations across the United States. [1] The "World News Roundup," the longest-running newscast in the country, ends with the service. Edward R. Murrow's wartime London reports formally closed last century; the institution they ran on closes next month.

The paper's Monday brief framed the sign-off as the press-freedom-wartime register's structural item: the Pentagon's Minab silence enters Day 7 Tuesday and Stars and Stripes' ombudsman firing enters Day 8. Wire-service Pentagon hands and small-paper radio stringers are exactly the press corps that follows long-tail accountability stories — Minab is the Day-Seven case in point.

The Pulitzer Audio Reporting prize was awarded Monday to Pablo Torre's independent podcast for the four-episode investigation of the Aspiration $28M deal that the NBA is now investigating. [2] The audio prize moved from broadcast institutions to an independent producer in the same news cycle that CBS Radio finalized its closure schedule. The two events read together as one institutional shift: the format the Pulitzer board ratified is the format CBS chose to leave.

The labor question runs separately. [3] Weiss and Tom Cibrowski cited "challenging economic realities" in the memo. The 700 affiliates have begun negotiating alternate feeds. The newscast that closes is a network newscast; the local stations will keep talking. The institution behind them will not.
